Will we ever reach gender equality?

We should dedicate every day to celebrate women and not only on March 8 because it is International Women’s Day

All of us have heard of the common saying that “behind every successful man, there is a woman,” but do we believe in it? Going by the prevalent cruelties towards girls and women, the answer is an unfortunate no! Looking at the present scenario, there is no doubt that women today walk hand in hand with men in every field of life, yet somewhere at some point, there’s still some inequality between the two.

Why is it so? Do girls and other women not have the right to live the way they want without any barriers and restrictions? Why do they have to be confined to the walls of their homes like a bird in the cage? What is it then about all the women safety and right that every nation talks about? Isn’t it still a myth? Gender equality is, first and foremost, a human right. A woman is entitled to live in dignity and in freedom from want and fear.

Imagine a world where your life is governed by others. You are not free to do as you wish and your every move is confined by the traditional ideas of society. You may have a promising future, yet you cannot get there. As insignificant as it may be, something is holding you back. We are 860 million young women and girls living in developing nations. We are more than just mere statistics. We are 860 million dreams, 860 million voices and we have the power to make a difference! Change needs to happen in the smallest places, in the most tangible ways.

With the rise and advancement of technology, the number of female feticide have increased in the world. A female is not just a woman or an opposite gender, she is a selfless mother, a caring sister, a loving daughter, a supportive wife, a loyal friend — a woman is all this and more. Despite being looked down upon, she has to worry about her own safety on almost a daily basis. Fortunately, hope is not lost. We as a global community need to ignite the fire of hope and keep it burning.

Since morality is not confined by physical borders, it should extend to each and every corner of the globe. It was quoted by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founding father: “No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you.” In light of International Women’s Day that was celebrated on March 8 and should be highlighted every day, let us celebrate womanhood and pay tribute to the indomitable spirit of women across the globe.
